Whatischurch.com is dedicated to the
pursuit of finding out what it means to be the church of Jesus Christ now
and in the decades to come. Another way of posing the question, "What is
church?" would be to ask, "What did Jesus intend his church to be?" The
purpose of this site is to tell our collective stories as we attempt, yet
again, to redefine and recapture the essence of church.
Pursuing the Kingdom of God Together
In the summer of 2001, my wife Amber and I moved to Jupiter, Florida with
a big dream to encourage small communities of faith in Palm Beach
County to have the kingdom of God as their primary concern. This
website and our
blog became a launching pad for many
local, national, and international relationships with people pursuing
God's kingdom and discovering their place in God's mission to the world.
The links at left tell the
story of the past
few years. The Articles are a great start to discovering what
questions like "What is church?", asked in the context of community and
worked out over a long period of time will accomplish. The Friends
links are people in South Florida and beyond who are on this journey
in one way or another. Resources are groups, authors, and larger
organizations that have been influential to us and the community of faith
we've been a part of.
If you have found this website, chances are you are seeking something more in your
experience of church or in following Jesus. You are probably not
angry or bitter at the church or at God for the situation you find
yourself in. However, you cannot stop believing that there is more
to this thing called Christianity and that there must be others out there
that feel the same. You need to know.........You are not alone.
"Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on
religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you'll recover your life. I'll
show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me--watch how
I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy
or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you'll learn to live
freely and lightly."
Matthew 11:28-30
