Childhood Milestone...

#168: Understanding Sarcasm

So we were at dinner tonight at a local fun wings and things eatery. I was sitting next to our eldest, Jackson (5-1/2), who was sitting next to our youngest, Hudson (2-1/2).

Hudson, while attempting to leave the table over the top of his brother's legs proceeded to step on said brother's legs with the weight of his solid 35 pound frame. After being aggressively placed back into his seat, Jackson exclaimed,

"Hey Hudson. Why don't you step on my legs a little harder next time?"

Yes!

unfortunately, my 6-year-old Eve hasn't learned that yet. last week at lacrosse practice, she was standing in line waiting to do drills and chatting, and their coach sarcastically said, "we're playing lacrosse here, anyone that just wants to sit and talk can go over there...", and she vaguely pointed to the sideline. To which, very excitedly, ran over and sat down. i thought she had got in trouble from my far off perch...then when practice was over, i asked her about it:

Me: 'Eve, did you get in trouble at practice?"
Eve: very excited with a smile on her face, "No, daddy, the coach was so nice...she said if we wanted to talk we needed to go over and sit down..."
Me: "But eve, no one else joined you..."
Eve: silently thinking...

Steven -- that story is truly hilarious. I'm literally laughing out loud.

Mike, this is SO right-on. That is a HUGE milestone. It opens up so, so very much.

Only "downside": Carolyn is a bit concerned that our kids are too well-drilled in this art, that other kids don't quite get it. So when she overhears some conversations, she cringes while laughing.

But congrats to the J-Train. And that bodes very well for the daddy-son future. He's getting less abstract, which means shared humor is truly here. He is becoming a real man, a sarcastic man.

That is an awesome story Steven. I've been one of the assistant coaches on Jackson's tee ball team this year (there's like 12 coaches), and the kids are always playing around in the dirt etc. A couple times I've said something like, "Hey, are you just going to sit there and play in the dirt all practice?" To which the kid usually gives me this look like, "Well of course, haven't you seen how cool all this dirt is to play with?"
