Oh Happy Day!
Warning. This post is for nerds like my brother, my buddy Matt, and Brant. Everyone else might just want to skip this.
Yes, the holy grail of ipod listening has been achieved. I have successfully installed my own aux-line in the van. A 2004 Mazda MPV for everyone else out there. All for around $100 and minimal swearing and throwing things.
Here's what I used: this and this and this very helpful forum thread. My first attempt at installation worked, but I had occasionally buzzing and popping. After some more research, I found I had a ground problem (the adapter has no ground - and neither does the ipod when running on battery). I hooked up a ground wire from one of the RCA jack sleeves to the radio housing and voila - no buzz. Today, I snaked the wire down through the dash to a little tissue box cubby below the pull-out cup holder. Fits like a glove. You simply turn on the radio, hit the CD button twice, "EX-1" comes up on the screen, and we're golden. Sweet! Here's some photos:

Sweet Bish, nice call. Now let me tell you the wrong way to do it:
Ironically in timing with your story, just last weekend I visited my cousin who lives a stones through from Gainesville off Williston Road in what I would define as the country. He raved and raved about a device that gives crystal clear sound for his ipod through fm. Though reluctant to believe, I let him show me in his brand new vehicle. To my dismay as we drove around it sounded excellent. So he sent me the link - www.eshop.macsales.com/shop/roadtrip/
And on Monday I bought it for 25 bucks and on Wednesday not only did it not work (in Orlando downtown that fm station comes in loud and clear), it also FROZE up my ipod.
Yes that's right Bish you heard me...froze up, like meaning buttons do nothing, could not change the song, the track, pause, menu, turn on or off....nada, like wave bye-bye to the 3,819 songs (no lie) on my ipod.
Immediately I went home, plugged my baby into it's mama to get some milk praying that would work (in other words I hooked up ipod up to my mac hoping to reset it). It was a miracle, the re-birth witnessed in front of my eyes. I breathed easily, thank you Jesus son of Mary God Bless America, and got back to work.
Moral of the story: Some things that work for others may not work for you.
Practical tip of the story: Make sure you have every single song that is on your ipod also backed up on a hard drive just in case...

Mike's songs are not "backed up" to anything, because they're all liberated from other people's iPods.
Brant
P.S. -- I'll take that back if you'll rig this up for me in the Quest.
I figured that request was coming. Have to look for a Nissan converter.
By the way, it is impossible to "liberate" songs from someone's ipod. (Well, not impossible, there are tricks...I've just never tried any of them.) Copying songs to a DVD and then giving them to someone else is another matter entirely. But I wouldn't know anything about that.

Well, Mike, there are programs that one (one without respect for applicable laws -- say, you) could use to allow "liberation" of songs from iPods.
I know about this because I've seen friends use them. "Former" friends, I should say. That was the last straw.
Best,
Brant
You can take the time to take these photos of your iPod getup but have left the family photo site untouched for almost a year. I see where your priorities are. Hummmm.
