Football School?

Well, let's call it a football/basketball school from now on. As Billy Packer said after the game, it was one of the most complete wins he's ever seen in a championship game.

I started following Gator basketball my freshman year at UF, when they sucked. After Billy Donovan took over as head coach, there has been a steady progression of growth as a program. The one achilles heel has been defense, but thanks to Larry Shyatt, former coach at Clemson, we seemed to have fixed all that nicely. I'm glad for Billy. He's had some tragedy in his family, a lot of criticism that he couldn't win in the big games, etc. This was a masterful coaching job tonight and a total team win. Gotta love it, huh Kyle:)

Gainesville's gonna be rocking tonight!

Oh yeah, and this is for Brant:

"When the men were returning home after David had killed the Philistine, the women came out from all the towns of Israel to meet King Saul with singing and dancing, with joyful songs and with tambourines and lutes." 1 Samuel 18:6

You guess??? That would be like saying your Steelers sort-of deserved to beat the Seahawks:) Most of America probably turned off their TVs at about 5 minutes into the second half...about when I turned off my TV during the Superbowl.

gainesville's still rockin... even my parents neighborhood had fireworks going off and people running in the streets, screaming... as for university ave, they just closed it down for the night - too many students hanging off traffic lights... literally. :)

make no mistake about it, FL played at the top of their game but there is no way they'd be there if it were not for the significant help of other teams. They should be sending out some gift baskets.

Now, granted, I am a graduate of UF, but I'm honestly surprised by some of the "wasn't that great of an accomplishment" vibe that many seem to have about the victory, or more accurately, the string of victories, for the championship. Here are a couple of the most common woes I've heard:

1) "They didn't play anybody good." Well, there's an obvious response to that in tournament play (unlike some bowl championships), and it's so obvious, I will let it remain unspoken.

2) "It's just a game, and games aren't that important." By itself, this is a valid point. However, when combined with #1, above, thou dost protest too much.

Maybe Florida has broken an unspoken rule about football schools that the so-called b-ball schools are upset about. But, for those who are deeply troubled by Florida's win, don't worry, some other team will win eventually, and, unlike Florida's win, it will be entirely due to the hard work of the team members, playing for a team that's supposed to win such titles.

Until then,

T
