Wiley E. Coyote

So I'm going for a walk this morning at about 6:30 and I hear this incredibly freaky sound coming from the greenspace across from our neighborhood. It literally sounded like a pack of wolves howling. But...naw. So I go on with my walk and later on decide to walk some trails in the greenspace. I come to a place that is sort of a wide-open area used for water runoff. On the other side of the woods, about 300 yards away, I see four, from what I could tell, wolves walking in a straight line into the woods. What the!? Wolves in Abacoa?

So I called Busch Wildlife Sanctuary this morning to see if I was dreaming or should I be worried about going on nature walks with the kids. Turns out, there is a known pack of coyotes that lives in Abacoa. The woman at Busch Wildlife was jealous that I had actually heard them howl. The development has kind of squeezed down their territory, but they live pretty much undisturbed in the greenspace. Nice!

We got tons of 'em here in Colorado. I wouldn't have expected them in Abacoa either. Gators, perhaps. But coyoties? I was out late doing a reflective walk kind of thing last winter. I was passing through some open space by Celestial Seasonings that is completely unlit and could hear them howling, sparring and sounding like they were fighting from down in a little gulch area below me in the darkness. It was quite freaky. They are skiddish and afraid of people but their sound sure can make your skin crawl!

Cool that you heard and saw them. We've got them here too. They're in all 50 states now. AND they can be dangerous. I know in California where they've been displaced by neighborhoods some kids have been attacked. They're not as skiddish as Wolves. I'm sure you could scare 'em off though.

Coyotes in Florida, hugh? I guess they are everywhere. There sure are alot out in the mountain states. I almost ran over a coyote last week on the way home from work. It was fighting another one on the shoulder of the road and decided it'd had enough and would rather run in front of a couple cars. They seem to do quite well in cities. Have many people's cats turned up missing in your neighborhood? Kitties must be a delicacy to coyotes. My friends who live outside the city limits have lost several barn cats to them.

Abacoa coyotes? Were they cleaning up after themselves with the little bags and putting them in the marked containers, before an evening of $6 beers at Rooneys?

The coyote is one of the single more adaptive creature on the continent. The attacks in California were unfortunate, but I wouldn't go so far as to say they are a dangerous breed (in fact, they are far less aggressive that many domesticated dogs). Learn to cohabitate is the need, with animal control for balance.
